True to his word, Ethan came with me to Home Depot to pick out a new cactus. I asked what it's name should be and he replied "Jango Fett". I suggested "Captain Pokey-Pants", but that was immediately rejected. He finally settled on "Pokemon" as an alternative.
This one is really a cactus (Stetsonia coryne), and it seems happy in its corner for now. Hopefully it will be around for a while.
